¡Hola! Thanks for joining us. We have created this PDF worksheet to help you practice the grammar rules to conjugate stem-changing verbs in the present tense in Spanish, particularly those whose stem (la raíz del verbo) will change from O to UE. We hope you find this very useful. Let’s start…
Directions:
Students could work individually or in pairs on these exercises. They can also solve it online through the quizzes in this page.
First, there are both regular and irregular verbs in Spanish. Some regular verbs will follow very predictable conjugation rules, but others like stem-changing verbs will also suffer a spelling change in the stem (the first part of the verb like DORM- in DORMIR) for some pronouns. For many of these verbs containing the letter -O in the stem, we will need to switch the -O for -UE for some pronouns, for example:
- Yo renuevo mi licencia cada 5 años. (I renew my license every 5 years – Here, the verb renovar has an -o in the stem, but instead of saying “yo renovo”, we will say “renuevo”)
- Tú duermes 8 horas al día. (You sleep 8 hours a day. – Here. the verb dormir also has an -o in the stem, so we will not say “tú dormes”, but “duermes”)
To solve the first exercise, students must complete the chart on the worksheet containing a list of 12 common stem-changing in Spanish that suffer an -O to -UE change in the present tense. Students could make use of a conjugation tool to double-check the right form of these verbs. As for the second exercise, students must fill in the blanks using the correct forms of the stem-changing verbs in parentheses, making sure each sentence makes grammatical sense.
